Most homeowners do not think about their switchboard until something goes wrong. The problem is that an ageing electrical panel rarely fails with obvious warning — it quietly creates fire and electrocution risks for years before an incident occurs. Knowing the warning signs means you can address the issue on your terms, not in the middle of a crisis.

1. Your Board Contains Ceramic Fuses
This is the clearest indicator that a switchboard upgrade is overdue. Open the meter box and look at the devices controlling your circuits. If you see white porcelain holders with a thin wire stretched between two terminals — or a visible strip of fuse wire — you have ceramic fuses.
Ceramic fuses were standard in Australian homes until the 1970s and into the early 1980s. They have several problems that modern circuit breakers do not:
- No earth fault protection — ceramic fuses respond only to overcurrent; they will not trip if current is leaking to earth through a fault or a person
- No automatic resetting — when a ceramic fuse blows, it must be rewired by hand; many homeowners rewire them with the wrong-gauge wire, which removes the protection entirely
- No visual indication of tripping — unlike a modern MCB, a blown ceramic fuse is not obvious until you inspect it
- Cannot accommodate modern loads — a ceramic fuse board typically cannot be upgraded in-place to accept the RCDs, MCBs, and surge protection required by AS/NZS 3000:2018
If your home has ceramic fuses, it almost certainly also lacks safety switches — which means your household has no protection against the most common cause of fatal electrical incidents in Australian homes.
2. No Safety Switches (RCDs) on the Board
A safety switch — also called a residual current device or RCD — detects when current is flowing to earth through an unintended path, such as through a person who has received a shock. It cuts power within 30 milliseconds, fast enough to prevent a fatal outcome.
Safety switches have been mandatory on all new socket-outlet and lighting circuits in NSW residential properties since 2000. Homes built before that date — and many homes with electrical panels that have not been touched since then — may have no RCDs at all.
To check whether your board has safety switches: look for a device with a small “T” (test) button. If no test button is present, you do not have a safety switch protecting that circuit. Press the test button to confirm it works — it should cut power to the relevant circuits immediately and require a manual reset.
In NSW, all residential rental properties must have safety switches on power circuits (mandatory since March 2006) and lighting circuits (mandatory since 2010). Landlords without compliant safety switches face significant liability exposure.
3. Circuit Breakers Trip Frequently
An occasional tripped breaker is normal — it is the system working as it should, protecting an overloaded circuit. But if the same breaker trips repeatedly — or if breakers trip under loads that should be well within the circuit’s rating — there are two possible explanations.
The first is an actual overload: too many high-draw appliances on the same circuit. This is increasingly common in older homes not wired for today’s appliances — air conditioners, induction cooktops, electric vehicle chargers, and ducted air conditioning all draw far more power than the appliances available when many Sydney homes were last wired.
The second is a faulty or ageing breaker. Circuit breakers have a finite mechanical life. After many thousands of trip cycles — or after decades of service — a breaker may trip at a lower current than it is rated for, or may fail to trip when it should. An ageing breaker that trips unnecessarily is not just an inconvenience; one that fails to trip when it should is a fire hazard.
If your breakers are tripping repeatedly without an obvious overload, have an electrician inspect the board.
4. You Smell Burning Near the Meter Box
Any burning smell near your switchboard is a potential emergency. Turn off your main switch, do not attempt to identify or fix the fault yourself, and call a licensed electrician immediately.
A burning smell from a switchboard typically indicates arcing — electrical sparking between terminals or conductors inside the panel. Arcing generates intense localised heat and can ignite the wiring insulation or the enclosure itself within minutes. It is one of the primary causes of electrical fires in Australian homes.
Common causes include loose terminal connections (which loosen further over years of thermal cycling), degraded wiring insulation, and overloaded circuits that have been running above rated capacity for extended periods.
Do not reset the main breaker and hope for the best. This fault requires professional diagnosis.
5. Lights Flicker or Dim When Appliances Switch On
Some brief dimming when a large motor-load appliance (air conditioner, pool pump, fridge compressor) starts is normal — motor starting currents are significantly higher than running currents, and all households experience a brief voltage dip at switch-on.
What is not normal is persistent flickering, flickering that occurs with smaller appliances, or flickering that happens randomly without an obvious cause. Possibilities include:
- Loose connections — within the switchboard, at the meter, or in the consumer mains cable connections; loose connections create resistance, which creates heat, which creates fire risk
- Undersized main cable — older consumer mains cables may not have the capacity to supply the home’s current load without a significant voltage drop
- Failing breaker or deteriorated wiring — either can introduce resistance into the circuit
Flickering lights that coincide with a switchboard that has not been inspected in many years warrant a professional assessment.
6. Your Home Is More Than 25 Years Old and Has Never Had Electrical Work
Sydney homes built before the year 2000 were wired for a different world. In 1990, a typical household ran: a fridge, a washing machine, a clothes dryer, a dishwasher, a television, and a few lamps. Today, the same house might also run: ducted reverse-cycle air conditioning, two or three split systems, an induction cooktop, multiple computers, a home theatre system, and potentially an EV charger.
A switchboard designed for 1990 loads may be technically working — no blown fuses, no tripped breakers — while still running circuits at or near their maximum rated capacity continuously. This accelerates insulation degradation, shortens the life of connected appliances, and increases the risk of an overload event.
If your home was built before 2000 and has never had the switchboard inspected or upgraded, a professional assessment is the right first step — even if you have not noticed any of the other warning signs above.
7. You Are Adding a Major New Electrical Load
Major additions to a home’s electrical demand — an EV charger, a solar system with battery storage, a new ducted air conditioner, a pool or spa, or an induction cooktop replacing a gas stove — almost always require a professional assessment of the switchboard before installation.
The electrician doing the installation will check whether the board has the capacity and the correct safety devices to support the new load. If the board is found to be at capacity, lacking RCDs, or non-compliant in other ways, the upgrade can often be combined with the new installation in a single visit — which costs less than two separate jobs.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my switchboard has ceramic fuses or modern MCBs?
Open the meter box (the metal box near your electricity meter, usually on an external wall). If you see white porcelain holders with thin wire inside, those are ceramic fuses. If you see rows of switches — usually black or white plastic, with a position that is either “on” or “off” — those are MCBs. If you are not sure, photograph what you see and send it to your electrician before booking a site visit.
My switchboard has circuit breakers, but no RCDs. Do I need an upgrade?
Having MCBs (circuit breakers) is a significant improvement over ceramic fuses, but it does not provide the earth fault protection that RCDs offer. You should have RCDs installed on all socket-outlet and lighting circuits. In many cases this can be done without replacing the full switchboard — individual RCBOs can be retrofitted to existing MCB boards. An electrician can assess whether a full upgrade or targeted RCBO installation is the right approach for your board.
Is it legal to have a switchboard without safety switches in NSW?
For homeowners who live in their own property, there is no retrospective requirement to upgrade a non-compliant switchboard under current NSW legislation. However, any new electrical work done on the property must comply with AS/NZS 3000:2018, which requires RCDs on all new circuits. For rental properties, safety switches have been mandatory on power circuits since 2006 and lighting circuits since 2010.
